As people who work with others, we will encounter people suffering from, physical, mental and emotional pain. The elements of yoga that have for thousands of years been shown to support us by balancing our nervous system, lowering our heart rate, encouraging self reflection and introspection are part of what we know works.

With the latest research we also know that interoception, choice making, empowerment not by achieving goals or postures, but by choosing what is right for your body has the capacity to rewire our brain. As a clinician, yoga teacher, Doctor, nurse, teacher or human service worker we come across people who have suffered from chronic stress on a very regular basis.

This training will give you the tools to support your clients to be able to use their bodies as a resource in an empowering way, and over time supporting the rewiring of the brain and fostering the ability to self regulate and self soothe. When we feel safe in our bodies we are better able to relate, learn and grow emotionally.

This training covers:

  • Understanding and being aware of signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exploration of the neurobiology of anxiety and depression.
  • Normalising anxiety as a necessary and adaptive behaviour for survival.
  • Understanding the role of genetics, personality, environmental and situational factors and attachment style in determining how to work with your student/client.
  • Understanding the role of thoughts and body sensations in the presentation of anxiety and depression.
  • The role of the nervous system and gaining an understanding of left and right brain presentations of anxiety and depression and the need to be able to recognise both.
  • The impact of mindfulness and other evidence based supports to complement treatment for students suffering from anxiety and depression.
  • Teaching postures, breathing and mindfulness techniques that can be utilised to create a program that is suitable for a group and for individuals depending on the type of class or presentation of the individual.
  • You will leave with the structure, material and knowledge to be able to start teaching your own 6 – 8 week course for your own client group or individual clients.

Who is this course designed for?
  • Yoga Teachers and yoga teachers in training who are  interested in expanding their teaching skills and developing more confidence in working with students / clients who suffer from trauma and mental health difficulties. Yoga teachers will develop a much deeper understanding of the concepts of Yoga Psychology and it’s capacity to empower students by providing safe and inclusive yoga practices with awareness.
  • Mental Health Professionals who are interested in bringing the body into treatment. There is now a significant body of evidence that has seen a marriage between yoga and Psychology. Neuroscience has shown that the mind and body are intrinsically linked and that trauma resides in the body. It has been my experience that when clients learn to befriend and trust their body, the capacity for clients to engage in therapy in a much safer and satisfying way is achieved. Yoga engages the nervous system teaching distress tolerance by balancing the nervous system, enhancing opportunities for neuroplasticity to occur by moving and breathing in a community setting with intention and on purpose.
  • Wellbeing professionals who are interested in the mind body connection and working in a holistic way towards healing and recovery.
  • Students of Yoga who are interested in further and deepening their knowledge in the context of ‘self’,  working on their own journey towards total wellbeing and personal discovery.
  • Teachers, nurses, first responders and all human service workers who come into contact with students/ patients who are distressed and overwhelmed and require significant support and containment. This course will give you the confidence to use grounding and stabilising techniques by using the body, breath and awareness of how the brain responds to anxiety.

About Martine

Martine is an Educator, Senior Yoga teacher, Trauma Therapist, and an accredited Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga facilitator· and Trainer. Having spent the past 30 years learning and practicing with some of the most highly regarded trauma researchers and trainers to discover a healthy way to work with all aspects of being, physical, psychological and emotional in a safe and body led way.

While studying with Bessel van der Kolk over 12 years ago she became clear that you cannot treat Trauma by working solely with the thinking mind. As a practicing Yogi she became passionate about using Yoga as a complement to working with mental and emotional stress. This realisation led to further study and accreditation as a Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator and study around the impact of the Brain, Neuroscience, and the Nervous System. Martine was now aware that the way forward in treating trauma was to work with a person as a whole being. From this moment onwards, Martine created The Yoga Clinic, where she could begin to work in this way.

Martine has been highly successful in this endeavour and is a highly regarded yoga facilitator, trauma therapist and trainer who works hand in hand with the therapeutic community in a collaborative and healing way. Martine offers Trauma Sensitive Yoga and Trauma therapy including Internal Family Systems, Deep Brain Re-orienting and EMDR. Martine offers clinical supervision for therapists interested in incorporating the body in treatment.

Martine developed and runs a 100 hour Training course Yoga for Embodiment and Healing which includes 5 modules that support bringing the body into treatment and support body workers and yoga teachers to be part of the treatment process. Martine now trains professionals internationally and continues to work in private practice as a mental health professional.
